Same rating, different system

This pairing certifies at 14.3 SEER2 — the same figure as the 5TTR4 matched to the standard 5TEM4 air handler. That is worth saying plainly rather than burying: you are not buying efficiency here. The two systems will cost about the same to run.

What you are buying is the indoor unit. AHRI measures efficiency, and efficiency is only one of the things an air handler does — the rating says nothing about how loud the unit is at two in the morning, whether the cabinet sweats in a humid attic, or what the coil does to your air over ten years of runtime. Those are the reasons to choose Hyperion, and not one of them shows up in a SEER2 number.

Worth knowing in general: AHRI certifies a system, not a condenser. The same outdoor unit can carry different numbers depending on what it is matched to — which is why buying a condenser and an air handler separately, without checking the certified pairing, is a genuinely bad idea.

The Hyperion cabinet

Hyperion is Trane's top air handler line, and the headline is the patented double-walled cabinet: the insulation is fully enclosed between two walls of steel rather than exposed to the air stream. Three consequences — less energy lost through the cabinet, no condensation forming on the exterior in a humid attic, and no insulation fibres or accumulated grime sitting in the path of the air you breathe.

The coil is all-aluminum with an epoxy coating, which resists corrosion and controls the odour and residue build-up that shortens the life of a standard coil. The Vortica™ multi-speed blower runs long and quiet rather than hard and short — which is also what pulls humidity out of a house.

  2. Line up your installer before it ships. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that causes trouble — equipment sitting in a garage while you ring round for someone free. You need a licensed HVAC professional; opening a refrigerant circuit requires EPA certification. Ask specifically what they charge to install customer-supplied equipment. How to find one.
  3. It ships crated on a freight truck. Orders typically ship within 3–7 business days. A complete system travels as two crates — condenser and air handler — which can arrive on different days. Delivery is to your address on a liftgate truck for one flat price, with nothing to choose at checkout. What delivery costs.
  4. The carrier calls to book a delivery window. That appointment is when your equipment arrives — not the ship date. Answer the call; an unanswered one is the most common cause of a delay.
  5. Inspect it before you sign. Two minutes at the tail of the truck decide whether a damage claim works. Note any damage on the delivery receipt specifically, not just "damaged", and photograph it before it comes off the truck. What to check.
