RunTru is a brand from Trane Technologies, the company behind Trane and American Standard. It was launched as a simpler, lower-cost line. The equipment is built by the same company, uses the same R-454B refrigerant and has a similar published warranty structure (each brand sets its own terms). The differences are in the details, and in the price.
The short version
- Choose RunTru if you want a dependable, matched system for the lowest price, such as a rental, a flip, or a home you plan to sell in a few years.
- Choose Trane if you want the Trane name on the unit, the wider choice of air handlers (including the Hyperion multi-speed and the wall-mount Compact Plus), and higher efficiency options.
- Either way, register the warranty within 60 days and use a licensed installer. That decides your coverage more than the badge does.

Where the extra money goes with Trane
Choice. RunTru pairs with one air handler. Trane gives you three, including the Hyperion multi-speed air handler, which lifts the system rating and runs quieter at low speed, and the Compact Plus wall mount for closets and condos where a standard air handler won't fit.
Efficiency headroom. If you're chasing a utility rebate tier above 15.2 SEER2, only the Trane pairings we carry get there. Check your exact pair with the AHRI match checker.
The name. Trane is one of the best-known names in the trade. For a home you're selling, a Trane badge on the condenser is something a buyer or inspector recognises.
Where RunTru makes more sense
On a heat pump, the gap is widest: about $2,600 on a 3-ton system. On an AC system it's about $840. For a rental, or for any house where the goal is reliable cooling at the lowest cost, that money is hard to justify. You still get a matched, AHRI-certified system from the same manufacturer, with a similar published warranty structure (each brand sets its own terms).
The installer matters more than the brand. Most early failures in a new system come down to installation: a dirty or kinked line set, the wrong refrigerant charge, a missing evacuation, or an air handler the ducts can't feed. A good installer with RunTru will beat a rushed install with Trane every time. See how to find an installer.
Don't mix the brands
A RunTru condenser should go with a RunTru air handler, and a Trane condenser with a Trane air handler. Mixing them, or pairing either with an old coil, can leave you with a system that has no certified rating, which can affect rebates and warranty claims. Every complete system we sell is a matched pair.
