Model comparison

Trane 5TTR4 vs 5TTR6: is the upgrade worth it?

Same cabinet style, same compressor type. The difference is efficiency, and whether it pays back depends mostly on one thing: a utility rebate.

Prices are from our own catalog on 19 October 2026. Energy figures are worked examples with the assumptions stated, not a promise of savings.

The 5TTR4 and 5TTR6 are Trane's two everyday single-stage air conditioners in R-454B. The 5TTR4 is rated 14.3 SEER2, the federal minimum in the South. The 5TTR6 is a 16 SEER2 series condenser that certifies at 15.2 SEER2 with the standard 5TEM4 air handler, and higher with Trane's Hyperion 5TAM5.

The short version

  • Pick the 5TTR6 if your utility pays a rebate at 15.2 SEER2 (FPL, Duke Energy Florida and Tampa Electric all do), or you'll own the house for 10 years or more.
  • Pick the 5TTR4 if there's no rebate where you are and you're selling or renting the house out in the next few years.

At 3 tons, the 5TTR6 system costs about $578 more.

What the extra efficiency saves

Going from 14.3 to 15.2 SEER2 cuts the electricity used for cooling by about 6%. Here's a worked example for a 3-ton system in Florida:

  • Assumptions: 2,000 full-load cooling hours a year, electricity at 15 cents per kWh.
  • 5TTR4 at 14.3 SEER2: about 5,030 kWh a year, roughly $755.
  • 5TTR6 at 15.2 SEER2: about 4,740 kWh a year, roughly $710.
  • Difference: about 300 kWh, or $45 a year.

On energy alone, the $578 takes over 12 years to come back. Your own number depends on your rate, your thermostat and how hard the system works. Run it with your figures in the SEER2 savings calculator.

Where the 5TTR6 wins: rebates

Most Florida utility rebates start at 15.2 SEER2, and the 5TTR4 doesn't reach it. At the time of writing:

  • FPL: $200 instant rebate through a participating contractor.
  • Duke Energy Florida: $300 to replace an AC, with a Home Energy Check before the work.
  • Tampa Electric: $40 at 15.2 SEER2, $550 at 16.2 SEER2 (a Hyperion pairing at some sizes).

A $300 rebate cuts the extra cost from $578 to $278, and the payback to about six years. Rebates have conditions, and some must be lined up before the install. Read HVAC rebates in 2026 before you count on one.

The rating belongs to the pair, not the condenser. A 5TTR6 on an old or mismatched air handler won't deliver 15.2 SEER2, and won't qualify for the rebate. Check your exact pairing and get the AHRI reference number in the AHRI match checker.

What doesn't change

Both are single-stage, so comfort and humidity control are about the same. Both use the same refrigerant. The bigger comfort jump is the air handler: the Hyperion 5TAM5 runs at more than one speed, which helps pull humidity out in a Florida summer. See the 5TTR6 with Hyperion system.
