If you've shopped for an air conditioner recently, you've probably noticed something: the refrigerant is different. Systems that used R-410A for the last twenty years are now R-454B.
Here's what actually changed, and — more importantly — what it means for you.
The short version
Manufacturers stopped building residential systems with R-410A on January 1, 2025. New equipment uses lower-GWP refrigerant, most commonly R-454B for central systems and R-32 for mini-splits.
This came from the AIM Act, which requires a phasedown of high global-warming-potential refrigerants. R-410A has a GWP around 2,088. R-454B is roughly 466 — about 78% lower.
If your existing R-410A system works, nothing about this requires you to replace it.
What R-454B actually is
R-454B is a blend, mostly R-32 with a small amount of R-1234yf. It performs similarly to R-410A — comparable efficiency, comparable capacity — which is why manufacturers chose it as the replacement rather than something that would force a redesign of everything.
It's classified A2L under ASHRAE Standard 34. That means mildly flammable, with a very low burning velocity. It is not equivalent to propane or the flammable refrigerants people picture.
New equipment is engineered around it: different components, leak detection, and updated installation standards. That engineering is why A2L systems are considered safe for residential use — not because the refrigerant behaves like R-410A, but because the equipment accounts for the difference.
If your current system still works
You don't need to do anything.
R-410A systems already installed can keep running and can still be serviced. R-410A is still produced for servicing existing equipment — the restriction is on manufacturing new systems that use it, not on maintaining the ones already out there.
What will change over time is price. As production winds down, R-410A gets more expensive. If you have an older system with a significant leak, that's worth factoring into a repair-versus-replace decision. But a working system is a working system.
Anyone telling you that you must replace a functioning R-410A air conditioner because of the refrigerant change is selling you something.
If you're replacing now
New systems will be R-454B. That's simply what's manufactured.
A few practical points:
You cannot mix refrigerants. R-454B is not a drop-in for R-410A. Different operating pressures, different oil, different components. A condenser and air handler must be a matched pair designed for the same refrigerant.
Your installer needs to be current on A2L. EPA certification is required to handle any refrigerant circuit, and A2L handling has additional requirements around leak detection and ventilation. Any competent licensed contractor will be up to speed — but it's a fair question to ask.
Your line set may be reusable. In many changeouts the existing copper can stay, though it must be properly cleaned and evaluated. Your installer will assess this.
Existing R-410A stock can still be installed. The EPA has allowed continued installation of units manufactured before the cutoff while supplies last. If you're offered a discounted R-410A system, that's likely why. It isn't illegitimate — but consider that you're buying into a refrigerant whose service cost will climb over the life of the equipment.
What we stock
Every central system we sell is R-454B — condensers, air handlers and matched complete systems from Trane, RunTru and Everwell. Our ductless mini-splits use R-32, the other low-GWP refrigerant common in that category.
That's deliberate. We'd rather sell equipment that meets the current standard than clear old inventory.
Worth being honest about
A2L equipment costs more than R-410A equipment did. New components, new safety systems, and an industry retooling. Anyone claiming the transition is cost-neutral isn't being straight with you.
The regulations are still moving. The EPA has already adjusted install deadlines once. If you're making a decision at the margin, confirm the current rules with your contractor rather than relying on an article — including this one.
