Overview

About this system

The RunTru A5HP4 heat pump condenser matched to the A5AHC air handler — one outdoor unit that cools in summer and heats in winter, with no furnace, no gas line and no flue. For a house in a mild climate, this is the whole HVAC system in two boxes.

What ships

  • Outdoor unit — RunTru A5HP4 heat pump condenser, 14.3 SEER2, single-stage, R-454B
  • Indoor unit — RunTru A5AHC air handler, multi-position, insulated factory-sealed cabinet
  • Both units crated and shipped together as an AHRI-matched pair

How a heat pump heats

Rather than burning fuel, a heat pump reverses its refrigerant cycle and moves heat from the outside air into the house. Even at 40°F there is usable heat in outdoor air, and moving it is far cheaper than generating it. That is why heat pumps run at several hundred percent efficiency where a resistance heater tops out at one hundred.

The trade-off is cold weather. As outdoor temperatures drop, capacity falls, and below a certain point the system leans on supplemental electric heat strips. In Florida, coastal Texas and most of the Southeast that point is rarely reached. Further north, a heat pump is usually paired with a furnace in a dual-fuel setup instead.

Sizing — 1.5 to 5 ton

Seven capacities. Heat pumps are sized on the cooling load first, then checked against the heating load — which is one more reason to get a Manual J calculation rather than guessing from floor area. Send us the model numbers and we will confirm a certified match.

Before you order

  • Must be installed by a licensed HVAC professional — EPA certification is required to open refrigerant lines
  • Plan for supplemental heat. The BAYHTR electric heat kit fits the A5AHC and is what carries the house on the coldest nights and during defrost cycles
  • Line set, disconnect, whip, thermostat and equipment pad are not included — note that a heat pump needs a thermostat that supports one
  • Register within 60 days to extend parts coverage from 5 years to 10 — see our warranty page

Why RunTru by Trane?

See everything we carry from RunTru by Trane

RunTru is Trane's value line. On a complete system you are buying the pairing as much as the parts — the condenser and the air handler certified together.

  • Same manufacturer, same engineering discipline. RunTru is not a rebadged import — it is Trane's own product, built to Trane's standards. The badge is different; the build is not.
  • The pair is what gets rated, not the condenser. AHRI certifies an outdoor unit against one specific air handler. The reference number on this listing is for that exact combination — which is also the number a rebate administrator or a permit office asks for.
  • The A5AHC is multi-position. One air handler part number installs upright or horizontal, so the certified pairing does not have to change because of the space you have to put it in.
  • All-aluminum coils. These resist the galvanic corrosion that eats copper-and-aluminum coils in coastal and high-humidity air — a real advantage in exactly the climates this equipment sells into.
  • The same warranty structure as Trane. Five years base on parts, ten with registration inside 60 days. The value line does not mean a value warranty.

How buying direct works — the whole process, start to finish 6 steps

You are buying the equipment from us and the labour from an installer you choose. Two numbers instead of one bundled quote — which is the point, but it does mean you are the one connecting them. Here is the whole sequence.

  1. Order the equipment. The price on this page is what you pay us. Nothing about installation is included in it, and nothing is added later.
  2. Line up your installer before it ships. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that causes trouble — equipment sitting in a garage while you ring round for someone free. You need a licensed HVAC professional; opening a refrigerant circuit requires EPA certification. Ask specifically what they charge to install customer-supplied equipment. How to find one.
  3. It ships crated on a freight truck. Orders typically ship within 3–7 business days. A complete system travels as two crates — condenser and air handler — which can arrive on different days. Delivery is to your address on a liftgate truck for one flat price, with nothing to choose at checkout. What delivery costs.
  4. The carrier calls to book a delivery window. That appointment is when your equipment arrives — not the ship date. Answer the call; an unanswered one is the most common cause of a delay.
  5. Inspect it before you sign. Two minutes at the tail of the truck decide whether a damage claim works. Note any damage on the delivery receipt specifically, not just "damaged", and photograph it before it comes off the truck. What to check.
  6. Your installer fits it, then register the warranty. Line set, disconnect, whip, thermostat and equipment pad are not included — your installer supplies those. Registering within 60 days of installation takes about four minutes and extends parts coverage from five years to ten. Warranty terms.
