About this unit

Trane's workhorse indoor half

The 5TEM4 is the air handler most Trane split systems in this catalog are built around. It is the convertible, multi-position cabinet that pairs with the 5TTR and 5TWR condensers, and it is the match behind most of the certified ratings you will see on our complete systems. If you are buying a Trane condenser and have no specific reason to choose otherwise, this is the handler that goes with it.

What the ECM blower changes

An ECM blower is an electronically commutated motor, and the practical difference is that it can run at part speed instead of only full speed. Two consequences you will notice: it draws substantially fewer watts across a season than an old PSC motor, because fan power falls faster than fan speed does; and it can hold a long, low airflow that strips humidity out of the house instead of short-cycling. In a climate where the discomfort is moisture rather than heat, that second point is the one that matters.

Convertible, so the building decides

Upflow, downflow and horizontal from one cabinet, configured at installation. An attic install goes horizontal, a closet goes upflow, and neither requires a different part number. The cabinet is insulated and factory-sealed, which keeps conditioned air inside the box rather than losing it into an unconditioned attic before it reaches a register.

It sets your efficiency, not the condenser

SEER2 is a property of the certified pair. The same 5TTR6 condenser certifies at different numbers depending on which indoor unit is behind it — around 15.2 SEER2 with this handler, and higher with the Hyperion 5TAM5. Neither is wrong; they are different systems. Read the AHRI reference number for the exact combination rather than the headline figure on any one component.

Heat kit sold separately

On a heat pump, or for auxiliary heat on a cooling-only system, the electric heat kit installs in this cabinet and is sized in kilowatts. It is listed in our accessories and is the item most often left off an order. Your installer should specify the rating for your house and climate.

Highlights

Key features

  • Efficient ECM blower (variable/multi-speed capable)
  • Convertible, multi-position installation
  • Improved humidity control & quiet operation
  • Durable insulated cabinet, R-454B compatible
  • Designed to match Trane 5TTR / 5TWR outdoor units

The air handler is the half of the system that lives inside your house and runs every time the system does. Trane builds it to the same standard as the unit outside.

  • The blower decides how the house actually feels. A multi-speed or variable-speed blower runs longer at lower output instead of blasting and shutting off — and long, low airflow is what pulls humidity out of the air. A single-speed blower satisfies the thermostat quickly and leaves the room cold and clammy.
  • Built to sit in an attic for twenty years. Insulated, sealed cabinet. That is what stops an indoor coil sweating onto a ceiling below it, and what stops you paying to cool the attic instead of the house.
  • Convertible, multi-position. The 5TEM4 and the Hyperion 5TAM5 install upright or horizontal, so one part number fits a closet, an attic or a garage. Where none of them fit, the 5TMM5 mounts flat to a wall.
  • Takes a field-installed heat kit. Electric strips drop in behind a single polarized plug, covering a heat pump's backup heat or, on an air-conditioner system, the only heat in the house.
  • Warranty that rewards registering. Five years on parts as standard, extending to ten on most components when you register within 60 days at trane.com. Registration takes about four minutes and doubles your coverage.

How buying direct works — the whole process, start to finish 6 steps

You are buying the equipment from us and the labour from an installer you choose. Two numbers instead of one bundled quote — which is the point, but it does mean you are the one connecting them. Here is the whole sequence.

  1. Order the equipment. The price on this page is what you pay us. Nothing about installation is included in it, and nothing is added later.
  2. Line up your installer before it ships. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that causes trouble — equipment sitting in a garage while you ring round for someone free. You need a licensed HVAC professional; opening a refrigerant circuit requires EPA certification. Ask specifically what they charge to install customer-supplied equipment. How to find one.
  3. It ships crated on a freight truck. Orders typically ship within 3–7 business days. A complete system travels as two crates — condenser and air handler — which can arrive on different days. Delivery is to your address on a liftgate truck for one flat price, with nothing to choose at checkout. What delivery costs.
  4. The carrier calls to book a delivery window. That appointment is when your equipment arrives — not the ship date. Answer the call; an unanswered one is the most common cause of a delay.
  5. Inspect it before you sign. Two minutes at the tail of the truck decide whether a damage claim works. Note any damage on the delivery receipt specifically, not just "damaged", and photograph it before it comes off the truck. What to check.
  6. Your installer fits it, then register the warranty. Line set, disconnect, whip, thermostat and equipment pad are not included — your installer supplies those. Registering within 60 days of installation takes about four minutes and extends parts coverage from five years to ten. Warranty terms.
