Overview

About this unit

The efficient RunTru heat pump

The A5HP5 is the same Trane Technologies platform as the A5HP4 with a larger heat exchanger and a higher-efficiency compressor, certified up to 15.2 SEER2 when matched with the A5AHC air handler. It runs year round in a heat pump climate, which is precisely why the efficiency step is easier to justify here than on a cooling-only system.

Judge a heat pump on both numbers

SEER2 describes cooling. HSPF2 describes heating, and on a unit that works twelve months a year it deserves equal attention — a condenser can look good on one and ordinary on the other. Both figures belong to the certified indoor/outdoor pair, not to the outdoor unit by itself, and both appear on the AHRI certificate for your exact match. We publish the reference number on every listing so you can look up the real pair rather than trusting a headline figure.

Where the extra efficiency earns its money

Because a heat pump handles heating and cooling, an efficiency improvement applies to both loads instead of one. In an owner-occupied house that is the strongest case for stepping up from the minimum-efficiency unit in this catalog. In a rental where the tenant pays the power, the A5HP4 remains the more sensible purchase — the efficiency premium is real, but you would not be the one collecting it.

Rebates and credits are worth checking first

Matches at this level can reach ENERGY STAR qualification, the threshold most utility rebate programs work from, and heat pumps specifically attract more incentive attention than air conditioners do. Programs vary by utility and change annually, and federal treatment changes with the tax year — our rebate guide and our tax-credit guide both cover where to verify the current position. Do it before ordering: an incentive can reverse which unit is cheaper overall.

Matching it correctly

Pairs with the RunTru A5AHC. Buy the combination shown on the AHRI certificate, because a mismatched indoor coil is the most common reason a new system fails to reach its rated performance. The air handler also needs an electric heat kit for supplemental heat, sized by your installer and listed separately in accessories. If you would rather not assemble the match, the complete system is listed as a single item.

Why RunTru by Trane?

See everything we carry from RunTru by Trane

RunTru is Trane's value line. Designed, built and tested by Trane, sold without the Trane price.

  • Same manufacturer, same engineering discipline. RunTru is not a rebadged import — it is Trane's own product, built to Trane's standards. The badge is different; the build is not.
  • Single-stage and straightforward. Fewer parts to fail, and any technician in the country can service it without specialist training or proprietary tools. On a rental you do not want to be waiting on a specialist in August.
  • All-aluminum coils. These resist the galvanic corrosion that eats copper-and-aluminum coils in coastal and high-humidity air — a real advantage in exactly the climates this equipment sells into.
  • The same warranty structure as Trane. Five years base on parts, ten with registration inside 60 days. The value line does not mean a value warranty.
  • Built for the jobs it sells into. Rentals, flips, builder work and straight like-for-like replacements — where what matters is that it runs, that it is cheap to service, and that it did not cost premium money.

How buying direct works — the whole process, start to finish 6 steps

You are buying the equipment from us and the labour from an installer you choose. Two numbers instead of one bundled quote — which is the point, but it does mean you are the one connecting them. Here is the whole sequence.

  1. Order the equipment. The price on this page is what you pay us. Nothing about installation is included in it, and nothing is added later.
  2. Line up your installer before it ships. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that causes trouble — equipment sitting in a garage while you ring round for someone free. You need a licensed HVAC professional; opening a refrigerant circuit requires EPA certification. Ask specifically what they charge to install customer-supplied equipment. How to find one.
  3. It ships crated on a freight truck. Orders typically ship within 3–7 business days. A complete system travels as two crates — condenser and air handler — which can arrive on different days. Delivery is to your address on a liftgate truck for one flat price, with nothing to choose at checkout. What delivery costs.
  4. The carrier calls to book a delivery window. That appointment is when your equipment arrives — not the ship date. Answer the call; an unanswered one is the most common cause of a delay.
  5. Inspect it before you sign. Two minutes at the tail of the truck decide whether a damage claim works. Note any damage on the delivery receipt specifically, not just "damaged", and photograph it before it comes off the truck. What to check.
  6. Your installer fits it, then register the warranty. Line set, disconnect, whip, thermostat and equipment pad are not included — your installer supplies those. Registering within 60 days of installation takes about four minutes and extends parts coverage from five years to ten. Warranty terms.
